THE HISTORY AND ARCHITECTURE

The location orginally intended for Winthrop, the work of the Building Commissioners was finished in October,1877 by Mr. Nathaniel J. Bradlee who designed a gothic modification of a Victorian style hospital based on a echelon/Kirkbride plan. In January,1878 Calvin S. May was appointed its first Superintendent.

1878 DANVERS OPENS

"The Kirkbride Complex occupying  Hathorne Hill was designed in the Victorian Gothic style"

1992 Danvers State Hospital closes
1992 DANVERS CLOSES 

"On June 24, 1992 the last clients were transferred to Tewksbury and Danvers State Hospital closed"

2006 DEMOLISHED 

"A court judge paved the way for the town to issue a demolition permit to Avalon Bay"
